Focusing On Adversity With Grace

I recently had a trial and while the outcome was favorable, there were many learning opportunities presented to me.

Along with 2 other attorneys, I was co-counseling this case.  Though we all are very experienced attorneys, we each had our own style and our own way of doing things.

I found as I witnessed their approaches during the trial thinking to myself, “Well, I wouldn’t do it that way.”  That’s when I started feeling that part of me that wants to control everything began to rear its head to scream “STOP!  Don’t do it this way!  This is not going to work!”  Then I sensed the negative thoughts of “Oh, no.  We’re going to lose this trial” beginning to flood my mind.

The good news is that I immediately became aware and recognized these feelings and then shifted into a state of grace, openness and acceptance.  I accepted the other attorneys for their skills, knowledge and expertise despite the fact that their styles were different from mine.

I surrendered that we could lose the trial and turned to focusing my thoughts on how can I be in grace during this situation?

You see, our thoughts create our world.  If I continued thinking those controlling thoughts, that may have been what would have come out during the trial.

Everything in our lives happens for a reason.  Adversity is there for us to learn.  If we fail to learn from the adversity and keep doing the same things, we will make the same mistakes each time.

There is more than one way to do something.  But, who you are being is the most important.

I choose grace.
